Afghan Financier Opens the Door For Women to Join the Business leads World

In the capital city of Kabul, a financier who loans money to female entrepreneurs whose workplace are far from the commercial centers. Her name is Storai Sadat. She heads Ariana Financial Services which helps guide Afghan women into the business community they were shut off during the era of the Talibans. Some of these women work alone from home, some of them work together in cooperatives that makes handicrafts, while others open businesses that sell groceries, beauty products and other merchandise.

Most of these Afghan women never got the opportunity to be educated on business leads reading, writing, or keeping a ledger, so the loan officers of Ariana also serve as their mentors.

"Even though they have a business, they don't know the value of the work they do," said Sadat, who acts as Ariana's executive director. "We go to their house and we set up a very simple income statement and very basic accounting."

Afghanistan, even after Taliban rule, remained a fortress of conservative Islam. So Sadat’s work to empower Afghan women puts her on the apex of social and economic change in Afghanistan.

Some women have been able to send their daughters at home and buy them pens and notebooks as their business prospered, while others have been able to attend schools themselves when their business leads boosted incomes, allowing them to work part-time.

These changes can result to disagreement between the wives and the husbands, so the women who wants assistance in their business ventures must have their husband’s permission to do so by signing the loan documents. While men can also ask for loans from Ariana but to do so, they must include their wives into the project.
