The National Do Not Call List (or, the national do not call registry) is causing quite a commotion.

Consumers are feeling relief, and businesses are scrambling to renew their marketing strategies.

But the do not call list really only affects companies that market to consumers (via the telephone). It does not affect business-to-business (B2B) telemarketing.

Furthermore, if you have a business relationship with a customer they can't file a complaint against you for contacting them...unless they ask you to stop calling them.

How much is the fine? If a consumer issues a complaint, the offending company can fine up to $11,000. That's a big fine...

Smart consumer-orientated type of businesses are not going to let the do not call list damage their businesses. Businesses are going to focus more on direct marketing and unique promotional efforts, internet marketing included.

Now that they can't count on the old cold calling anymore, they are compelled to use more inquiry driven marketing approaches.

The do not call list is also compelling businesses to upsell and try to get more from their client bases. In other words, start selling more often and sell harder to your current customer base, and inquire for referrals (if your customers like you, your products and your services, they will WANT more of your products and services. So be assertive when it comes to marketing back to your client base. As the great Zig Ziglar says, "Timid salespeople have skinny kids.")
